Dean Blandino: Pass interference was proper call on Jimmy Graham

By Bill Bradley, contributing editor

Should the officials have called offensive pass interference on New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham during his Hail Mary touchdown catch last Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers?

"Yes, Jimmy Graham should have been called for offensive pass interference," said NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino on Tuesday during his weekly "Official Review" segment on NFL Total Access. You don't see pass interference on Hail Mary's very often, but he puts both hands in the back of the defender, bends his arms and creates that separation."

The 49ers won the game 16-13 in overtime with many of the Saints officials upset about the call at the end of regulation that would have given New Orleans a victory.

Blandino said the question arose if pass interference should be called on any desperation pass plays.

"Typically that's where you don't see pass interference (called)," he said. "Players are jockeying for position and we do allow some contact.

"But here -- a two-handed shove in the back to create separation -- that foul has to be called."
