Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen met with the media Monday as normal, expressing anticipation that he will remain the team's coach in 2014.
"I have been given indication that I will be back. I have every intention of being back," Allen said before noting that he will have to "wait and see" after meeting with owner Mark Davis. "I haven't been told that I won't (be back)."
NFL Media columnist Michael Silver reported Sunday that Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie received positive signals about their status last week.
Davis confirmed to the San Jose Mercury News on Monday that he will meet with Allen next week.
Although Davis gave every indication that Allen will keep his job, he did say there were scenarios in which Allen might not come back.
"I don't know, what if John Madden decided he wanted to be a coach again?" Davis quipped.
Allen's fate won't be solidified until the front office and ownership finish the end-of-the-year process, but Davis emphasized that "the only people who've been replacing Dennis as head coach of the Raiders is the media."
Allen is also already in the end-of-the-year process of looking over his roster. He doesn't love what he sees at his most important position.
"I'm not sure if we have the quarterback of the future in the building right now," Allen said.
Terrelle Pryor and Matt McGloin will probably cringe when they hear that, but Allen was just stating the obvious. McKenzie has done a terrible job with the quarterback position since taking over.
Allen has shown that he could be a good coach with a little more talent. At this stage, it looks like he'll get a chance. But the Raiders have been known to throw a curveball or two over the years.
