Former Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen is returning to New Orleans, where he won a Super Bowl as Sean Payton's secondary coach in February of 2010.
Allen is expected to rejoin Payton's staff as a senior defensive assistant, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday morning, via a source informed of the team's plans.
It's an interesting hire because Allen used his postseason success as a springboard to the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator job in 2011. If Rob Ryan turns in a second consecutive disappointing season, Payton could be tempted to turn to Allen as his new defensive boss.
Ryan has coordinated defenses for four different organizations in the past decade. Nobody has to remind him that the NFL is a results-oriented business.
