Kyle Williams, breathe easy: Devin Thomas can hurt you no more.
Thomas, who earned his place in New York Giants lore with two key fumble recoveries in the NFC Championship Game, tweeted Sunday that he's retiring at the age of 25.
Thomas was the 34th overall pick of the Washington Redskins in the 2008 NFL Draft, but he never made an impact in D.C., finishing with 40 catches and three touchdowns in 34 games. After being released four games in the 2010 season, he briefly landed with the Carolina Panthers, before catching on with the Giants in 2011.
The Giants likely aren't defending Super Bowl champions if Thomas didn't do his job on special teams in the NFC title game. His second fumble recovery set up the game-winning field goal in overtime. He recovered the first fumble after alertly realizing a bouncing punt had deflected off Williams' leg.
"I mean, you know, football, it's just a game," he told the New York Daily News. "I enjoyed playing it for awhile. I had my greatest moments obviously with the Giants. I felt my spirit going other ways. I just felt it was a good time to let the game go. I think this is the perfect time."
Thomas shut it down despite signing with the Chicago Bears in March.
