By midday Friday, the Miami Dolphins housed more quarterbacks (four) than cornerbacks (three) on their ever-evolving roster. That ratio isn't for long in South Beach.
Ben Volin of The Palm Beach Post reported Friday that the Dolphinshave received calls about backup quarterback Matt Moore. It's unclear if Miami is willing to deal last year's starter, but the team is holding on to veteran arm David Garrard -- at least for one day, according to Volin.
We've seen a lot from Moore during this month's run of HBO's "Hard Knocks." After he was relegated to the backup role behind rookie Ryan Tannehill, we watched as Moore graciously accepted his demotion but continued to battle. He's a well-respected player on this roster after leading the Dolphins to six victories down the stretch last season and being named the team's MVP.
The Dolphins have a crowded house at quarterback, but shopping Moore before the season would be a mistake. Garrard is coming off knee surgery, and Pat Devlin is a project. Moore gives this team its best chance to win if Tannehill flops. It's not a surprise that teams are interested, but why not wait until one team has been reduced to utter desperation at the position?
As Miami whittles down its roster, the team's final 53 men should hold off on any festive celebrations. The Dolphins need help in the defensive backfield and all over the board. Miami will spend the weekend aggressively monitoring the waiver wire for help. Today's team will look markedly different -- at quarterback and elsewhere -- a week from now.
UPDATE: Volin later reported Friday that Garrard has performed better in his workouts, which could lead to Moore being traded before Week 1, according to a source.
