We've seen it over and over in recent NFL history: A new team owner hits the scene, wants to make a big splash, and winds up getting humbled. Football is different than most businesses.
"One thing I've learned is this is one hell of a complex business, I've gotta tell you," Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said Monday at the NFL Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, Fla. "And trying to figure out how you're going to do things and maneuver things around, playing within the system, I think that's very important."
Ross famously swung and missed during high-profile pursuits of Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher and Peyton Manning. The Dolphins owner sounded defiant about it all on Monday. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says Ross was as emphatic as he's ever been, poking the table in front of him repeatedly while he defended himself.
"Know what?" Ross said. "I'll do it again and again. I'm going to be bold. And you don't lose for trying."
If nothing else, Dolphins fans know they have an owner who is hungry to win. Miami will be aggressive, even if Ross hasn't figured out everything that goes into being an NFL owner yet.
"Let me tell you, money will never be an issue for us becoming a winning football team," Ross said. "That I can tell you right now."
Finding money is not an issue. Finding the right people to take Ross' money remains a work in progress.
