When Mike Shanahanreturns Sunday to the land where he won two Super Bowls, Denver fans will see a lot of recognizable offensive weapons.
While they do not yet match the Hall of Famers that Shanahan's offenses boasted in Denver, the Washington Redskins feature a stellar one-cut running back and an emerging athletic tight end.
Former RedskinsSuper Bowl MVP Doug Williams faced Shanahan when he was the Broncos offensive coordinator in SB XXII. Williams sees one big similarity in those old Broncos teams and the current version of the Redskins: the quarterbacks.
"I see a common link the way he coaches, but back then I think he had that guy, they had John Elway," Williams said Sunday on NFL Network's "NFL GameDay First." "I think now he has that guy, he has Robert Griffin, if he can get up and play with the health and everything."
Williams views RGIII's mobility as the key to what makes Shanahan's offense move.
"I think the last couple weeks he is playing the way Mike wants him to play," Williams said. "Mainly, move around, mobile quarterback and make plays. I don't think John ran nearly as much as Robert Griffin has done, but he does move around and Shanahan likes that."
Shanahan won two Super Bowls with the Elway-Terrell Davis-Shannon Sharpe trio. There are some similarities in how Shanny built his offense around Griffin, Alfred Morris and up-and-comer Jordan Reed, but let's not get carried away with the comparisons until the Redskins do a lot more winning.
