It was one year ago yesterday that Drew Brees looked at the Saints' roster and said, "Why not the New Orleans Saints? Tell me why we can't win the championship."
The Saints did not win the championship. They didn't even make the playoffs, as crumbling defense and an inconsistent offense led to a 7-9 finish. But Brees remains confident the Saints are a Super Bowl contender in 2015. He was recently asked by ESPN reporter Ed Werder if he's convinced he wins a second title in New Orleans before he retires.
"I'm very convinced. It's what drives me and keeps me going," Brees said. "I love this game for so many reasons. The opportunity to have played it for going on 15 years is rare, it's unique. I want to continue to play for absolutely as long as I can, as long as I'm having fun, playing at a high level and maybe I'll stay healthy, why not play this game? It's a blessing."
Brees clarified his statement from last year that he believed he could play until he was 45.
"I said I think I could play until I was 45.
"Do I think that's possible? Yes, absolutely. Could that happen? Yes. Would I love for that to happen? Yes. I'm not naive to knowing that I'm on a series of one-year contracts, just like everyone else in the league. I feel like I can find that juice. I've got it. It's there. I'll keep having fun and keep slinging it around."
Brees acknowledges "there's a lot of work to be done" to lift the Saints from also-ran status to Super Bowl contender. We agree with that assessment fully, but also see the NFC South for what it is: A fast lane to the playoffs for a team with its act together.
