Gary Zimmerman belongs to a number of exclusive clubs. He is one of a few players who have been selected to two of the NFL's All-Decade teams. He played in only four seasons during the 1980s (at least in the NFL), but was easily a member of that all-decade team. He also was selected to the 1990s All-Decade team.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame also is a smaller fraternity of players. But Zimmerman is one of the few players to play in the USFL and then go on to earn entry into the Hall of Fame. Jim Kelly, Reggie White, and Steve Young are a few notable members of this exclusive class. In fact, Young and Zimmerman both played for the Los Angeles Express.

Zimmerman, originally property of the Giants, joined the Vikings in 1986. Zimmerman played for the Vikings through 1992 and was a member of the 1991 Vikings team that led the NFC in rushing that year.

Zimmerman joined the Broncos in 1993 where he extended his streak of consecutive games played to 169. Zimmerman's 1996 season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, yet he was still was voted to the Pro Bowl that season.

Zimmerman was voted to seven Pro Bowls and was a first- or second-team All-Pro selection eight times during his career.
