Eagles fire DC McDermott, who could land in Denver, Carolina

The Philadelphia Eagles have fired defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, a team source said Saturday.

The Eagles later confirmed the move on their Twitter page.

The Eagles don't have a replacement in mind right now and will sort through several potential candidates, according to the source.

The Eagles also used their Twitter page to announce the firing of defensive line coach Rory Segrest on Sunday. Segrest had been with the team since 2006 and served as defensive line coach the last two seasons.

It is a rarity for Eagles coach Andy Reid to fire an assistant or make major staff changes such as this except when losing people to other organizations.

McDermott already is drawing interest from other teams, a league source told NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi on Sunday. McDermott is in line for the defensive coordinator vacancies with the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers, and he's already negotiating with the former.

McDermott joined the Eagles in 1998, coaching the team's secondary and linebackers, then was promoted before the start of the 2009 season when legendary coordinator Jim Johnson was no longer healthy enough to coach.

The Eagles' 21st-ranked defense allowed an average of 216.8 passing yards and 110.4 rushing yards per game this past season.
