Eight things we learned Tuesday

"Ryan Fitzpatrick is a smart, trusty veteran."

"With Ryan Fitzpatrick, you know what you are going to get."

"Enemkpali just saved the Jets season with his actions."

These are three of the lukewarm takes said or written Tuesday about the Jets quarterback situation. Geno Smith's broken jaw will cost him 6-10 weeks, and it cost linebacker IK Enemkpali his job. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan should be commended for having a veteran quarterback in place that has experience with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. But Fitzpatrick is nothing but predictable.

Fitzpatrick is just as streaky, overaggressive, and mistake-prone as Geno Smith. Fitzpatrick is the destitute man's Brett Favre. He's the football version of an NBA irrational confidence "heat check" guy. He's the player you bring off the bench that is going to take his shots, defense be damned. (Think J.R. Smith ... or Vinny Johnson.)

This is not a slight towards Fitzpatrick. He's lasted eleven seasons in the NFL because of this style. You don't throw for 310 yards and three touchdowns in your first NFL start as a seventh-round draft pick without thinking you are better than you really are. Brandon Marshallisn't the only Jets player with huevos.

The Jets open against the Browns at home before matchups with the Colts, Eagles, and Dolphins. Coach Todd Bowles wouldn't promise Geno his job back, but Fitzpatrick is a quarterback best used in small doses. He can help the Jets win some games, but there's a reason why there was no quarterback competition in Jets camp this month. Smith was getting all the reps and showing progress because he has a much higher ceiling than Fitzpatrick in Gailey's system.

The Jets have endured an awful month with Sheldon Richardson, Dee Milliner, and Devin Smith all in the headlines for reasons Bowles would rather forget. Now Bowles needs Fitzpatrick to come off the bench hitting shots from long range, or Jets fans could be doing the unthinkable by mid-September: Chanting for Geno Smith.

Here's what else we learned Tuesday:

1. Two big names at running back could be back in the league soon. The Cardinals have reportedly offered a one-year contract to Chris Johnson, while the Browns admittedly are considering a contract offer for Ray Rice.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians and Browns coach Mike Pettine have both publicly bemoaned the health of their young running backs recently.

2. The Cardinals have undergone a lot of transition this offseason. One story that slipped under the radar Tuesday was the pending suspension of starting tackle Bobby Massie. Arizona also has some questions about the interior of their offensive line.

3. NFL VP Eric Grubman didn't mince words when talking about the city of Oakland's attempt to keep the Raiders.

4. Other news out of Chicago: The NFL Draft is coming back to town in 2016.

5. The Steelers have decided what kicker will get to replace Shaun Suisham at kicker, and he has plenty of playoff experience. It's surprising that Garrett Hartley was without a job considering he's hit on 81 percent of his kicks in his career.

6. One sleeper to watch in the Dallas running back race according to Tony Romo? Undrafted rookie Gus Johnson.

7. Despite resting a sore elbow Tuesday, Johnny Manziel's progress under center was a big topic in Cleveland. Marc Sessler had a good writeup on Manziel's development from Berea.
