Fax machines aside, Elvis Dumervil has enjoyed an NFL career that has been both productive and relatively low-key.
The Ravens defensive end will enter a new season just 10 sacks shy of 100 for his career. During the offseason program, Dumervil kept a note in his locker with the number "23." The number represents what would be the NFL's new sacks record if Dumervil can reach his personal goal.
"If I can hit that number, that'll mean we'll be in the Super Bowl for sure," Dumervil said during minicamp last month, according to The Baltimore Sun. "You try to win games, you try to win championships. To me, there's nothing more important, because you can have the stats and accolades, but if you're sitting home, it really doesn't do any justice."
Dumervil is aiming high, but it's not an absurd thought given his resume. The 10-year veteran tied a career high last season with 17 sacks, breaking the single-team franchise record previously held by Peter Boulware. Only Justin Houston (22) and J.J. Watt (20.5) had more. Former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan -- with an assist from Brett Favre -- holds the single-season record with 22.5 sacks.
Dumervil takes pride in approaching the century mark for career sacks. He currently ranks ninth in the stat among active players.
"I think that's a great achievement to try to reach," Dumervil said. "So, the opportunity is there and that's not always the case with everybody. I'm grateful for that. It just shows the consistency, and I don't take that lightly."
A record-breaking season won't guarantee the Ravens are playing in February, but it will certainly be a very promising sign for a defense in transition following the trade of Haloti Ngata.
