The Denver Broncos could lock down Von Miller without wielding the franchise tag.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Broncos are poised to push for a mega long-term extension for the linebacker. Per sources, there is optimism a deal gets done after the sides talked at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Broncos general manager John Elway provided some clarity Thursday about ongoing contract negotiations, saying the two sides are "in the ballpark" at this point.
"We're discussing with Von," Elway said. "We've exchanged some offers. We'll continue to meet with his representatives. We feel good about it. Obviously with the career he's had already and the way that he played this year, we're very hopeful to get something done."
Miller wants to be the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL, a distinction owned by Ndamukong Suh, who signed a six-year, $114 million contract with $60 million in guarantees last offseason. In a similar spot as Miller last year, Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston signed at $101 million deal with $52.5 million guaranteed.
Getting a deal done with Miller prior to the March 1 deadline to tag players would allow Elway the option to franchise tag quarterback Brock Osweiler.
Miller holds a boatload of leverage at the moment. If his contract gets done before the tag deadline it will affect how several dominoes fall heading into free agency.
