The newest member of the Titans made the absolute best of a bad situation.
Eric Decker was a late release by the woebegone Jets earlier this month, took one visit to his now-hometown Tennessee Titans in Nashville and signed a contract with a team that could very well end up making the playoffs in 2017.
"It was kind of a perfect storm," Decker said, via the club's official site. "You only get so many years to play this game, and I wanted to find the right fit. I wanted to come to a place where I can help out, and this is home."
He added: "There were a lot of factors. This is a team on the rise, and I like the coaching staff, the GM, and the philosophy upstairs. I like the quarterback, the locker room and the mentality. When I talked to the GM and the coaches, finding out what they wanted out of me, what my role would be, Tennessee was the best opportunity."
Decker, whose deal is worth $3.85 million and can grow to $5.35 million with incentives, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, went from playing in a rebuild to being a part of one of the league's most dynamic offenses. Tennessee has invested heavily in the receiver position this offseason to diversify Marcus Mariota's set of targets -- something that could provide Decker with a few more favorable matchups than he's used to.
This was one of the few late spring acquisitions -- much like Jeremy Maclin to the Ravens -- that simply made sense. While first-round pick Corey Davis is the future, it doesn't hurt to provide him with a solid running mate.
