Fred Jackson: 'Creative' Gailey would be good for Jets

The Jets under former coach Rex Ryan were a lion on defense and a lamb on offense.

With NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reporting that Chan Gailey is expected to take over play-calling duties for new coachTodd Bowles, has Gang Green finally unearthed a coordinator who can challenge the AFC East?

Bills running back Fred Jackson, who played under Gailey for three seasons in Buffalo, says the Jets are in good hands.

"He was attacking," Jackson told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. "He found a weakness in defenses and tried to exploit it. Whatever matchup he found, he went back to it. He wasn't afraid to go back to it throughout the game. I think that's one of the reasons we had some success."

Gailey was hardly a magic-worker, but he deserves credit for C.J. Spiller's breakout campaign in 2012. After blasting for 1,703 total yards that autumn, the Bills running back has since failed to achieve numbers even remotely close.

"He puts guys in different places to make plays," Jackson said. "He was creative. That was one of the reasons C.J. and I thrived in that system. He knew how to create ways for us to get in space."

Buffalo's offense ranked 25th, 14th and 19th during his three years in Buffalo, with the Bills never winning more than six games in any of those seasons. Those teams were short on offensive talent and filled with questions at the quarterback position -- not unlike the Jets.

Out of the NFL for the past two seasons, Gailey is an intriguing hire because of what his presence might mean for a playmaker like Percy Harvin in a spread-based attack.

This Jets roster needs difference-makers, but after suffering through years of milquetoast game plans from Brian Schottenheimer, Tony Sparano and Marty Mornhinweg, there's reason to believe this offense will be more fun to watch in 2015.
