Waiver Wire

Presented By

Freeman, Orton will be popular names off the waiver wire

NFL.com offers up 10 players to target off the waiver wire to improve your fantasy football team. The number listed in parenthesis is the percentage of NFL.com leagues that the player is still listed as a free agent.

Josh Freeman, QB, Buccaneers (97.0 percent)

Let's play a little fantasy football triva. Who has more points after the first two weeks of the season - Tom Brady, Tony Romo or Freeman? Believe it or not, it's Freeman. Not only has he already thrown four touchdown passes, and Freeman is on pace to rush for over 600 yards. While I wouldn't start him in Week 3 against the Steelers, Freeman is becoming a very viable No. 2 fantasy quarterback.

Kyle Orton, QB, Broncos (75.5 percent)

We can all agree that Matt Schaub is a fantasy star, right? Well, he's only scored 1.28 more fantasy points than Orton after two weeks. I'm not saying that Orton will be a star, but it's clear that the absence of Brandon Marshall hasn't crushed his value. Sure, the potential for Tim Tebow to take over as the starter down the road is cause for concern. But for now, Orton should be owned in more fantasy leagues.

Marshawn Lynch, RB, Bills (97.8 percent)

Is it just me, or did it seem like the Bills were showcasing Lynch for a trade against the Packers (who ironically, lost Ryan Grant in Week 1)? Whatever the reason, Lynch led the Bills with 17 carries in what was a blowout loss at Lambeau Field. If you have the roster room, it might make sense to add Lynch and stash him should the Bills decide to move him. C.J. Spiller owners sure hope that happens.

Mike Tolbert, RB, Chargers (99.7 percent)

The ankle injury that Ryan Mathews suffered in Week 2 is not considered serious, but Tolbert is still worth a look off the waiver wire as a potential handcuff. He ran, rumbled and plowed his way to 82 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns against the hapless Jaguars. Tolbert is like a bowling ball with shoulder pads, so he could see goal-line work even with Mathews ahead of him on the depth chart.

Mark Clayton, WR, Rams (56.5 percent)

Clayton, who was in this space last week, went from 10 catches in Week 1 two just two catches in Week 2. However, both of those catches went for touchdowns. He's clearly become one of the better targets in the pass attack for fellow Oklahoma product Sam Bradford, so Clayton is now back on the fantasy radar. He'll be a potential No. 3 fantasy wide receiver in Week 3 against the Washington Redskins.

Demaryius Thomas, WR, Broncos (96.8 percent)

With all the talk about Dez Bryant, fantasy owners forget that Thomas was actually drafted ahead of him back in April. He appears to be 100 percent back from a problematic foot ailment after an eight-catch, 97-yard, one-touchdown outburst against the Seahawks. It might be hard to determine who puts up the most fantasy points between Thomas, Eddie Royal and Jabar Gaffney, but Thomas certainly has the most upside.

Mike Williams, WR, Buccaneers (85.1 percent)

Williams continued to impress in Week 2, posting 54 yards and one touchdown in a win over the Panthers. The rookie has now scored in each of his first two NFL games and has to be owned in leagues with 12-plus teams. Like Freeman, I'm not starting Williams in Week 3 based on a terrible matchup against the Steel Curtain, but the schedule is very favorable overall for this talented Syracuse product.

Marcedes Lewis, TE, Jaguars (68.1 percent)

Honestly, I've never really trusted Lewis as a fantasy option. But after two weeks, he's fourth in fantasy points among tight ends on NFL.com. Lewis also has a favorable matchup next on the schedule, facing an Eagles defense that allowed seven catches and 108 yards to Brandon Pettigrew in Week 2. I don't think he'll be consistent overall, but Lewis is worth a look in most leagues while he's playing well.

Neil Rackers, K, Texans (80.7 percent)

Kickers are the Rodney Dangerfield of fantasy football -- they get no respect. But a good kicker can still help you win your fantasy league, and Rackers has been one of the hottest players at the position. After two weeks, he's third in fantasy points among kickers - he's actually outscored a few of the top running backs like Ray Rice and Maurice Jones-Drew! If Rackers is a free agent, go out and get him.

Patriots defense (46.6 percent)

The P-Men didn't look so hot on the defensive side of the football in Week 2 against Mark Sanchez and the Jets, so they'll be fired up against Buffalo. The Bills have one of the worst offenses in the league, scoring a combined 17 points in their first two games. Not only is the matchup attractive, but coach Bill Belichick is also certain to have his defense hyped up in a big way after a disappointing loss.
