As a journeyman entering his age-35 season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh McCown was the most controversial of Around The League's offseason "Making the Leap" selections.
McCown is a unique breakout candidate because his game tape and numbers from seven appearances with the Bears last season are undeniably impressive.
All it took was one offseason of practices for All-Pro defensive tackle Gerald McCoy to become convinced that McCown is going to take the NFL by surprise in 2014.
"I don't know how much people really know how good Josh McCown is," McCoy said Thursday morning, via the Tampa Bay Times. "I think a lot of people are about to see how good he really is."
McCoy's high praise comes on the heels of Bucs linebacker Jonathan Casillas' assessment that McCown is "on another level" from Mike Glennon entering training camp.
"People don't realize how athletic (McCown) is," McCoy added. "He's (35), but with the amount of time he's played, he's 28. His mental capacity is as old as it gets. He's been around for a while. His leadership ability is incredible, and he's going to lead this team."
New coach Lovie Smith wasted no time placing McCown atop the quarterback depth chart in March. In just four months since signing, McCown has already become entrenched not only as the starter but also as the unquestioned team leader.
