Giants, Jacobs could mutually benefit from restructured deal

Brandon Jacobs' restructured contract could work to his and the New York Giants' advantage.

Jacobs' 2011 base salary dropped $1.75 million in the new deal, but he could earn up to $2 million in incentives, *The Star-Ledger* reported Tuesday, citing NFL Players Association records. The newspaper speculated that Jacobs would need a career year to hit all of the incentives, but some of them are obtainable even as he shares carries with Ahmad Bradshaw.

Jacobs was willing to take the paycut last week to facilitate the Giants' re-signing of Bradshaw, his good friend. Bradshaw received a four-year, $18 million deal Thursday, with $9 million in guaranteed money.

There is another way the restructuring helps Jacobs. His deal now includes a provision that moves $500,000 of his 2012 base salary to a roster bonus payable in March. So either the Giants will decide to pay the bonus and retain him and his $4.4 million salary for 2012, or release him early enough in the offseason that he can find another team well in advance of training camp.
