Gun charge dropped against ex-49ers RB Coffee

SHALIMAR, Fla. -- A gun charge in the Florida Panhandle has been dropped against former San Francisco 49ers running back Glenn Coffee.

According to a court document signed Thursday, Assistant State Attorney William Bishop determined that Coffee did not violate the law by having a loaded pistol in the center console of his 2008 Cadillac during a traffic stop.

Under Florida law, a person can possess a concealed firearm if its "securely encased."

Fort Walton Beach police stopped Coffee's vehicle earlier this month for speeding. The gun was found after the vehicle was towed.

Coffee was charged with possession of a concealed firearm. Neither Coffee nor his attorney returned messages early Friday.

The 23-year-old former Alabama star left the 49ers in August to focus on ministry.
