Haloti Ngata will not need surgery on injured left knee

The Baltimore Ravens, already having a pretty good week, got more good news Friday on the health of defensive lineman Haloti Ngata.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Friday that an MRI confirmed Ngata suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in Sunday's Super Bowl XLVII win over the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source. The injury will not require surgery.

Ngata left the game in the third quarter after San Francisco 49ers guard Aaron Boone fell into the back of his left leg during a Frank Gore touchdown run. Ngata remained on the field for several minutes before being helped to the locker room. He did not return, sparking fears that the four-time Pro Bowl selection suffered a serious injury.

The Ravens had been optimistic the injury wasn't serious. Ngata was actually seen jogging in and out of the Ravens' locker room on Monday morning and wasn't using crutches this week.

It was a frustrating, if not fitting, way to close the season for Ngata, who was limited by injuries throughout the year. He finished 2012 with 51 tackles and five sacks before adding 13 tackles in four playoff games.
