With a chance to bury the rest of the NFC East, the New York Giants forgot their shovels.
Big Blue came out flat against the Washington Redskins on Sunday and trailed 20-0 in the fourth quarter. The Giants finally made a game of it late, thanks to another ridiculous touchdown catch from Odell Beckham Jr. But it was too little, too late.
Now the teams are tied atop the sad division with 5-6 records.
Receiver Dwayne Harris admitted Giants players might have overlooked the Redskins.
"I think we were ready to play, but we probably took this team a little bit for granted because ... I don't know," Harris said, via NJ.com. "I don't know everyone else's mindset but we came out slow. I think everyone was ready to play, but we came out too slow."
Given that the Giants haven't been the model of consistency this season and missed the playoffs the past four years, the idea they might have overlooked any opponent -- let alone one within striking distance of the division lead -- seems flabbergasting.
Perhaps the fact that New York had won its last five games against the Redskins, including a dominating 32-21 victory earlier this season, made the team overconfident.
"I think it was us," Harris said. "We weren't feeling it early. It took us a while to get going. In the first half we had too many turnovers. It was one of those games where it was a playoff game and we didn't play the way we were capable of playing. ... The way we played today was definitely not a showing of what we can do."
The Giants came out flat and never recovered. Now the NFC East is up for grabs.
