SAN FRANCISCO -- With Johnny Manziel embroiled in another controversy-fueled offseason, he has yet to go on the record -- even with the Cleveland Browns.
Team owner Jimmy Haslam told reporters on Friday that he hasn't been to reach the quarterback.
"Johnny has not responded to us, but we'll do anything we can to help him personally and our thoughts and prayers are with Johnny and his family," Haslam said. "We're not worried about Johnny Manziel the football player, we're worried about Johnny Manziel the person, and I think that's all we need to say on the issue."
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport tweeted that Haslam "appeared frustrated" and "emotional" as he spoke about the young player.
Manziel's ex-girlfriend claimed the Browns signal-caller struck her "several times" during an argument on Saturday night, according to an incident report released Thursday by the Fort Worth (Texas) Police Department. After the report was released, the Fort Worth and Dallas police departments, which were investigating the alleged incident, confirmed to NFL Media that Manziel will not face charges.
On Friday, a Texas judge signed a protective order against Manziel that prevents him from making contact with his ex-girlfriend for two years, WTAA-TV in Dallas reported.
"We've reached out several times since all this came out just last Saturday, just as we would any other player, and I think it's enough said on the issue," Haslam said. "I think it's a personal issue now, it's not a football issue."
On the football front, though, Manziel's once soaring star has tumbled to earth. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported this week that Cleveland will release the signal-caller on March 9. The team released a strongly worded statement after the quarterback's latest incident and, on Friday, his agent, Erik Burkhardt, announced that he has parted ways with the 2014 first-round pick.
Manziel's father, Paul, told the Dallas Morning News on Friday: "I truly believe if they can't get him help, he won't live to see his 24th birthday."
The NFL is also "looking into" Manziel's latest troubles and, per a league spokesman, plans to have NFL security contact Manziel's ex-girlfriend and her family as part of their investigation into last weekend's incident.
UPDATE: The Dallas Police Dept. announced Friday night it has launched a criminal investigation of Manziel after receiving a complaint of domestic violence assault against the Cleveland Browns quarterback.
