While some coaches distance themselves from an underperforming team, Browns coach Hue Jackson seems to have gotten more emotionally involved than ever with his 0-12 club.
After Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Giants, a game that saw Cleveland hang around for nearly 60 minutes, Jackson said he would not get discouraged.
"I have never been through this," Jackson said, via the team's official site. "I know you guys always ask me, but as I told you before, I'm not going to fall off a cliff or anything like that.
"These guys, these players, this organization, (Browns owners) Dee and Jimmy (Haslam) and (executive vice president of football operations) Sashi (Brown) mean too much to me for me to ever feel like that. Do I ever get disappointed and frustrated? Yes, I don't want you guys to feel like I don't. I don't want you guys to think I don't get mad or sad or disappointed. I go through all of those emotions. But at the same, I know what I signed up for. I know through our injuries and the things we have been through this season, where we are and where we are trying to go.
"You can either beat yourself up, and I do that enough. Or you can just put your head down and keep fighting and push through this."
Jackson added that the Browns will practice Monday and Tuesday before heading off on the bye week.
While Browns ownership obviously expected at least one win to this point, this was part of the reason they hired Jackson in the first place. Given their offseason roster-gutting strategy, there was always the chance that Jackson would have to double as the public face of a fledgling startup company.
At this point, it's getting difficult for Browns fans to dig deep enough and find the positive. Maybe on Sunday that was Corey Coleman's touchdown or the play of undrafted free agent corner Briean Boddy-Calhoun. The desire to deliver something more than that seems to be what's eating away at Jackson to begin with.
