Indianapolis Colts center Phil Costa retires at age 26

Center Phil Costa spent a little more than a month on the Indianapolis Colts' roster.

The Colts announced Monday they placed the 26-year-old offensive lineman on the reserve/retired list.

"Phil feels it's in his best interest to retire from the game," Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said in a statement. "We certainly understand and wish him nothing but the best."

Costa spent his first four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, but fell out of the rotation in favor of 2013 first-round draft pick Travis Frederick. Costa appeared in just six games the past two years.

The Colts signed Costa to a two-year contract in March with hopes he would push starter Khaled Holmes as Andrew Luck's center.

Even with Costa on the roster, the Colts were likely searching for a center in the upcoming NFL draft. With his surprising retirement, that need becomes even greater.
