Chicago Bears receiver Markus Wheaton missed practice Sunday after undergoing an appendectomy.
Coach John Fox told reporters Wheaton remained in the hospital after undergoing the procedure at 5 a.m. The wideout's appendix did not rupture, per Fox. The coach did not expound on how long Wheaton would be sidelined.
The speedy Wheaton signed a two-year, $11 million contract with Chicago this offseason. He was expected to enter the season as a deep threat alongside Cameron Meredith and Kevin White in the Bears' receiving corps.
Here are some other injuries we're tracking on Sunday:
- Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith continues to make progress from a devastating pre-draft knee injury that cost him his rookie season in 2016, NFL Network's Steve Wyche relays from Oxnard.
Smith is practicing in full pads Sunday and will go through some contact drills for a second consecutive day -- the first time he's done so in camp.
There is still no certainty if he will play in preseason games or in the regular season, per Wyche, but he has had no medical setbacks and is clearly making strides.
- The Chargers announced that rookie wide receiver Mike Williams is not expected to practice during training camp after being placed on the active/physically unable to perform list. Williams met team doctors on Saturday.
- Redskins running back Keith Marshallreportedly tore his right patella tendon in practice Saturday and will miss the 2017 season, according to ESPN's John Keim. Marshall was sidelined for the 2016 season due to an elbow injury.
- Lions tight end Eric Ebron left practice early Sunday with what coach Jim Caldwell called a hamstring injury when talking to reporters after practice.
- Colts rookie safety Malik Hooker told NFL Network's Stacey Dales that he had no issues with either hamstring during Sunday's practice. The Colts took Hooker off their PUP list Saturday.
