Two weeks after taking the first snap of training camp, Green Bay Packers running back Alex Green finds himself squarely on the roster bubble.
With Eddie Lacy and DuJuan Harris sidelined, Green was relegated to third string behind James Starks and rookie Johnathan Franklin in Friday night's 17-0 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Facing second- and third-team defenses, Green managed just 16 yards on seven carries.
Once Lacy and Harris are back to full health, Green figures to become extraneous as the fifth back on the depth chart.
The 2011 third-round draft pick "continues to hear his name discussed in trade talks," according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Are we to infer that Green is getting the scoop from his agent, or simply picking up on the talk radio vibes?
Either way, the roster squeeze is on. Beat writers have tabbed Lacy as the favorite to start while coach Mike McCarthykeeps a seat warm for injured incumbent Harris. Meanwhile, Starks and Franklin have outplayed Green in camp.
General manager Ted Thompson should consider himself fortunate if he's able to collect more than a conditional late-round pick for a running back with a yards-per-carry average of 3.4 on 138 totes through two seasons.
Thompson's initial feelers should be directed toward Reggie McKenzie of the Oakland Raiders and John Dorsey of the Kansas City Chiefs, as both were front office executives in Green Bay when the Packers drafted Green.
