Running back Brandon Jacobs, whose hefty contract could prompt the New York Giants to release him this offseason, again emphasized Tuesday that he wants to stay with the reigning Super Bowl champions.
"Well, I have spoken to my agent and I do expect to be fully back with the New York Giants next season," Jacobs said in an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio, according to The Star-Ledger. "These guys in the front office, they've been doing this for years. They know what they gotta do. I want to be back. But they actually know what has to be done if they want me back."
According to the newspaper, Jacobs is scheduled to receive a $500,000 roster bonus next month and a $4.4 million salary next season. Jacobs said earlier in February that he would be open to restructuring his contract in order to keep playing with the Giants.
Jacobs acknowledged Tuesday that the team might choose to cut him loose instead, though he's optimistic it won't.
"If they don't want me back, then that's another story in itself, then nothing has to be done. But I got a feeling that they do (want me back)," Jacobs said. "So, you know, things get worked out. I definitely plan on being Big Blue for the 2012 season."
Jacobs, 29, won two Super Bowl rings with the Giants, the latest coming this past season after he rushed for 571 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games. He was the team's regular starter in 2008 and 2009, but he became a backup after Ahmad Bradshaw's emergence.
