Just when you think the Kansas City Chiefs' season couldn't get any worse, it gets worse.
Running back Jamaal Charles left the field Thursday night after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit on a carry in the fourth quarter against the San Diego Chargers. He was seen getting tested on the bench by trainers after the injury, but he was later standing on the sideline.
Charles did not return to the Chiefs' 31-13 loss. Coach Romeo Crennel would only say after the game that Charles is scheduled to be evaluated.
Charles later said the Chiefs tested him for a concussion, but he was cleared, according to The Associated Press. He said he felt like he could have re-entered the game.
"They said it wasn't a concussion because I remembered everything," Charles said, according to the Kansas City Star. "That's very fine, because they would try to hold me out next week."
One week after only getting five carries, Charles had 12 rushes for 39 yards along with 27 yards receiving on three catches before leaving the game. It's been an uneven season for Charles coming off ACL surgery. He's enjoyed some monster outings, but this will be his fourth game with 40 or fewer rushing yards, including the last three in a row.
Peyton Hillis and Shaun Draughn took over running back duties after Charles was hurt.
