Jason Garrett's job is safe. For now, anyway.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters Thursday that Garrett will return as coach in 2014, regardless of how the current season plays out, according to NFL Media's Desmond Purnell.
Jones' vote of confidence comes at a curious time for a 5-5 Cowboys team that is preparing for a pivotal matchup against the New York Giants. Dallas currently is a half-game behind the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East. The team is coming off an embarrassing blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Garrett signed a four-year contract extension with the Cowboys in 2011, which gives him one more year on his deal after this season. Garrett has a record of 26-24 with no playoff appearances during his time as head coach.
We suppose Thursday's message from ownership counts as good news for the coach, though Garrett also was with the organization when Wade Phillips was canned eight games into the 2010 season.
That, of course, came after Jerry Jones said he never would fire a coach during a season. There's your grain of salt.
