It was a fitting end to an ugly game.
New York Jets left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and left guard Willie Colon were ejected from Thursday's 13-10 loss to the New England Patriots with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter.
A fracas broke out after Jets rookie Geno Smith's third interception, sealing the game in the Patriots' favor.
As interceptor Aqib Talib was dancing along the sideline instead of simply taking a knee, Jets center Nick Mangold dove at the cornerback's lower legs. The Patriots' sideline objected, with Alfonzo Dennard in the thick of the pushing and shoving.
As the melee continued, Ferguson found himself giving Dennard the business with a series of nonsensical punches to the hard plastic headwear. Colon pushed an official.
Ferguson and Colon promptly were tossed.
"I hope I don't get suspended," Colon said after the game, via the New York Daily News. "I lost my temper. I lost my cool. I know better, so it's my fault."
As Ferguson and Colon lagged behind on the Jets' bench, an unusually impassioned Patriots coach Bill Belichick shouted at the referees to "get them the (expletive) out of here." His wish was the refs' command, as both players took the vanguard in the Jets' walk of shame.
