Jets decide to part ways with underperforming LB Gholston

NEW YORK -- The Jets announced Wednesday that they have waived former first-round draft pick Vernon Gholston after three disappointing seasons.

The defensive end was the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft out of Ohio State. Gholston made just five starts and didn't record a sack in 45 regular-season games.

Gholston didn't play in any of the Jets' playoff games last season.

The Jets also said Wednesday they had released backup tight end Ben Hartsock. The eight-year pro had one catch in seven games last season.
