Pro Bowl defensive end Sheldon Richardson's 2015 season is in question following his recent speeding incident that resulted in resisting arrest charge and various traffic violations.
Coach Todd Bowles said Friday that he has "no idea" if Richardson will play for the New York Jets this season.
"You lose a lot of trust," Bowles explained. "... We are prepared to play without him."
Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan added Saturday, "There is a degree of trust that has been broken, but we are supportive of him. ... We're doing everything in our powers to help him not just as a football player develop, but as a man making sure he does the right things off the field."
Emphasizing that the third-year star clearly needs help, Bowles added that he's more concerned with Richardson as a person, not as a football player.
With a 12-year-old in the back seat of a a 2014 Bentley Silver Spur, Richardson was clocked at speeds of 122, 135 and 143 miles on July 14, according to a statement of probable cause issued by the O'Fallon, Missouri, Police Department and obtained by NFL Media.
The subsequent arrest occurred less than two weeks after the league announced Richardson's four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
To make matters worse, Richardson failed to notify the Jets about his arrest.
"I've got to do better," Richardson said Friday, via the New York Post. "I will do better. ... That was just one bad night. I thought it would be fun to show my family members something. They'd never been in a car like that before."
Until the NFL decides Richardson's fate, Bowles will go forward with Muhammad Wilkerson and No. 6 overall draft pick Leonard Williams as his defensive ends.
