Jo-Lonn Dunbar is back with the St. Louis Rams.
Dunbar officially re-signed with the team Tuesday, nearly one month after he was released on the eve of a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Offensive tackle Max Starks was released to make room for Dunbar.
Dunbar practiced Tuesday, according to the team. The timing is optimal with Will Witherspoon -- Dunbar's replacement in the starting lineup -- dealing with a hamstring injury.
Dunbar's ban drew a public lashing from Rams coach Jeff Fisher, who called Dunbar's actions "selfish." Still, the move to drop Dunbar felt like an unnecessary risk. The weakside linebacker was a 16-game starter last season who finished with 115 tackles, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions.
Dunbar was the 15th-best 4-3 outside linebacker last season, according to Pro Football Focus. His intensity and run-stopping ability should provide some lift to a scuffling defense.
