Jim Bob Cooter is a great name. Anyone who tries to deny this is either a liar or a fool.
It's nice to see that Bears head coach John Fox is on the right side of history here.
"I love the name," Fox said, via the Detroit Free Press. "He and [Vikings cornerback] Captain Munnerlyn. I recruited Captain way back when I was in Carolina. Those two are right up there, player and coach. But I love saying Jim Bob's name."
Fox and Cooter -- whoa, does that sound like a hacky mid-market drive-time radio duo or what? -- have history together. Cooter was on Fox's staff with the Broncos, and Fox thought enough of the young assistant that he tried to hire him as offensive coordinator when he got the Bears job. The Lions blocked that attempt, then eventually installed Cooter as their top boss on offense.
Cooter has taken the opportunity and run with it. Stafford has played the best football of his career since Cooter replaced Joe Lombardi and the Lions are 14-7 in that time.
"He's done a terrific job," Fox said. "Very, very good, young coach. Jim Bob's a good man, got a lot of respect for him. He's a bright, young coach."
See, it's not just Cooter. Jim Bob slays as well. Put 'em together and it's the ice cream sundae of names. It would never get past wife legislation for me, but every man should at least pitch Jim Bob when it comes to baby naming rights. The worst she can say is no.
