Jonas Mouton entered training camp hoping to get his NFL career on track. Instead, a worst-case scenario played out.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the San Diego Chargers linebacker is done for the season after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in practice the previous day, according to a source informed of the injury. UT-San Diego was the first to report the news.
It's a crushing setback for Mouton, who has failed to make his mark in San Diego since being selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was in a fight for a roster spot this summer as a backup behind Manti Te'o and Donald Butler.
The Chargers' depth at linebacker is being tested. Mouton's injury comes just weeks after 2012 first-round pick Melvin Ingram was lost for the season to an ACL tear.
It won't be a surprise if the Chargers take Mouton's latest setback as a reason to cut ties. Mouton missed his entire rookie season with a shoulder injury, then played very little last year. Patience might be about to run out.
