The blow-by-blow of Josh Freeman's troubled relationship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers presses on.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday, per a union source, that the Bucs fined Freeman twice in the last month, including once in the past week for conduct detrimental to the team. That conduct includes missing at least one team meeting and participating in an unauthorized media interview. Sports Illustrated's Jim Trotter first reported the news and Trotter also says Freeman plans to appeal the fines, per a source.
The fine could give the Buccaneers an opportunity, if future detrimental actions occur, to suspend Freeman without pay. If suspended, it could make it easier for the Bucs to trade Freeman without paying his salary.
The relationship between the club and player already was debilitatingly toxic and continues to devolve. From the missed team photo, to the benching, to the leak of medical information, to the team fines, Freeman's situation can only end with him in a different jersey.
It appears the Bucs plan to bathe in the toxic sludge as they wait for a desperate team to cave and give them something in return for their former starting quarterback. We wouldn't be surprised if some sort of resolution occurred before their bye week ends. A team can only take so much self-inflicted drama.
