The Cleveland Browns are down a quarterback after Brian Hoyer tore his ACL in Thursday night's win over the Buffalo Bills.
So how about Josh Freeman?
Don't hold your breath. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Cleveland isn't expected to make a run at the former Buccaneers passer, according to a source familiar with the Browns' thinking.
Freeman is available after Tampa Bay released him Thursday, but Cleveland's sitting tight with the underwhelming Brandon Weeden under center.
The long-term plan in Cleveland -- at least before Hoyer hit the scene -- was to use May's draft to select the team's quarterback of tomorrow. Adding Freeman to the mix would only disrupt the chemistry of a young team playing hard. Besides, Freeman isn't a guy you can start right away. He's not a cerebral passer and, on the field, he's not much of an upgrade over Weeden.
The Browns don't need another mixed bag at the position. Barring Hoyer winning the job again in 2014, next year's starter isn't on the roster. It's not Weeden, it's definitely not Jason Campbell, and it won't be Freeman.
