Josh Freeman works out for Chicago Bears

Josh Freeman is back on the grid.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Freeman worked out for the Chicago Bears on Monday, according to a source informed of the quarterback's plans. It's believed to be the first free-agent visit for the signal-caller, who split last season between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports first reported Freeman's visit.

Jay Cutler is locked in as the Bears' long-term starter, but the team's backup job represents a perfect landing spot for Freeman, still just 26 years old. Coach Marc Trestman has a reputation for making quarterbacks better, and Josh McCown's success last season only reinforced that calling card.

Freeman has had quite the fall from grace, of course. He opened the 2013 season as the Bucs' starter, got benched, then released. He stumbled in one memorably awful start with the Vikings after Minnesota picked him up in October.

Freeman needs to reboot the machine. Having Trestman there to flip the switch and re-work the wires could be the best thing that ever happened to the quarterback.
