Julian Edelman not working at DB for Patriots in OTAs

Julian Edelman was a valuable utility man for the New England Patriots last season, but it appears his plate could be a little less full in 2012.

Edelman played wide receiver, defensive back, and special teams return man for coach Bill Belichick in 2011. Edelman told Masslive.com that he hasn't attended a defensive meeting or practiced with the unit during the first two weeks of OTAs.

Edelman wouldn't divulge whether he had a conversation with Belichick about his role in the upcoming season.

"You'd have to ask coach on that," Edelman said, following the Patriots' time-tested motto of 'Why say something when you can say nothing at all?' "All I can do is just worry on trying to learn the receiver position and whatever they want me to do on any other phase of the game."

Versatility is always good for a wide receiver, especially if you're on this Patriots roster. There are 11 wideouts vying for a role with the team, not counting the recently dispatched Anthony Gonzalez.
