Two weeks after being cut by the Baltimore Ravens, Justin Forsett has found a home.
The running back tweeted that he's signing with the Detroit Lions. The team later confirmed the move.
Forsett worked out for the Lions on Monday.
Buried on the Ravens' depth chart behind the more impressive Terrance West, rookie Kenneth Dixon and pass-catching back Buck Allen, Forsett asked for his release from Baltimore so he could land somewhere he might play. He should get that opportunity in Detroit.
The Lions lost starting running back Ameer Abdullah to injured reserve with a foot injury. Rookie Dwayne Washington is battling ankle troubles. Theo Riddick is a pass-catching back, not a between-the-tackles player. Zach Zenner has proven ineffective outside of preseason action.
The Lions rank 23rd in rushing, with a meager 89.8 yards per game on the ground for the season. In the past three games without Abdullah, Detroit averaged a pathetic 65.3 YPG rushing -- quarterback Matthew Stafford was the team's second-leading rusher in each of those contests.
Stafford has played his best under OC Jim Bob Cooter but needs help from the rushing attack to keep pass rushers at least somewhat honest.
Since his breakout season in 2014, Forsett has struggled to find space -- the Ravens might blame part of those struggles on the move from Gary Kubiak to the now-dismissed Marc Trestman -- averaging 4.06 yards per carry in 13 games.
Detroit needed a between-the-tackles runner, and the 30-year-old Forsett wanted a chance to prove he's still got juice left. It's a match that makes sense.
