As cutdown day approaches next Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs receiver Kadarius Toney sits squarely on the roster bubble.
The former first-round pick played with the backups Thursday night in K.C.'s preseason finale versus Chicago as he attempts to make the squad. In 17 snaps, Toney caught two of three targets for 26 yards and returned a punt for 16 yards.
"We went through last year with him, so we kind of know who he is," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after the 34-21 loss to the Bears. "He is a talented kid. He's battled to make the team and all that bit. We've never questioned the talent there at all, it's just him staying healthy was the main thing."
The top of the Chiefs' pecking order appears set at this stage. When Marquise Brown is healthy, he, Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Justin Watson make up the top four. None played on Thursday. Skyy Moore was dealing with an injury early in the week and saw just two special teams snaps, but his spot on the club appears safe.
The rest battle for the final roster spots.
A disappointing 2023 for Toney was plagued by injuries and inconsistent play. He again battled health concerns during camp and rarely flashed. The Chiefs have given him some reps in the backfield this offseason to see if his versatility could add to the offense, but he didn't take a handoff during preseason action.
Toney's ability on punt returns could put him over the edge of others competing for the final WR spot, but at this point, it will be a surprise if he makes a competitive Chiefs roster.
If he doesn't stay in K.C., the question becomes whether a third club gives the talented but unproductive player another chance.
