It's been a grim season for the 1-6 Kansas City Chiefs.
Check this out: They've played through seven games this year without holding a lead at any point during regulation.
ESPN's Adam Schefter points out they're the first team to achieve that dubious feat since the 1929 Buffalo Bisons. Even more ominous: The Bisons shut down operations after that disastrous season.
The Chiefs aren't about to fold, but it's never too early to cease irritating your loyal fan base. Kansas City has a chance to spread a little sunshine against the Chargers on Thursday night.
After all, the Chargers have problems of their own. They've dropped three consecutive contests and appear to be a team in free fall.
Matt Cassel is back at quarterback for the Chiefs. He's a big reason this teams ranks 22nd in passing, but Kansas City remains intriguing on the ground. They rank third in the run.
Therein lies Thursday night's matchup to watch. The Chiefs are dead in the water if Jamaal Charles and Co. don't get unhooked early. That won't be easy against San Diego's second-ranked run defense. Watch the line play tonight. The winner of this battle likely will dictate the game.
It's not a battle of titans, but both teams are desperate for a win, and that often generates interesting football.
