While the football world anxiously awaitsTony Romo's fate, the Cowboys are making other moves at quarterback.
Dallas announced the re-signing of journeyman Kellen Moore, the NFL's lone left-handed quarterback.
The Cowboys aren't finished at the position. They are still expected to add another passer this offseason, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
Last year's backup, Mark Sanchez, remains unsigned. The team has also met with veteranJosh McCown, who remains an option for the No. 2 job.
How lucky were the Cowboys in 2016?
Owner Jerry Jones publicly lamented his decision not to overpay for Memphis' Paxton Lynch in the first round of the 2016 draft. Hopscotched by the Raiders for Michigan State star Connor Cook early in the fourth round, he ended up settling for Mississippi State's Dak Prescott 35 picks later.
By the time training camp opened in late July, Prescott remained behind Moore on the depth chart.
"Kellen Moore has shown the 'it,'" Jones raved in May. "He's got the instincts, he's got the anticipation, he knows what's going on, he gives me and us a great feeling about basically improving."
When Moore went down with a broken ankle early in camp, the Cowboysmade advances at McCown and Nick Foles before Prescott emerged as a preseason sensation -- and ultimately displaced Romo as the franchise savior.
Despite Jones' customary hyperbole, Moore lacks NFL-caliber size and arm strength. He's best suited to the No. 3 role, behind Prescott and an experienced veteran such as McCown or Sanchez.
