Fourth-round draft pick Kirk Cousins announced Thursday on Twitter that he had signed his rookie contract with the Washington Redskins.
The Redskinsquickly confirmed the quarterback's signing, and Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com and NFL Network reported, according to sources, that the standard four-year deal is worth $2.57 million, which is consistent with Cousins' draft slot (seventh pick in the fourth round). The slot also calls for a signing bonus of $472,688.
A three-year starter at Michigan State, Cousins is the Spartans' all-time leader in completions (723), passing yards (9,131) and passing touchdowns (66) and was expected to be a second- or third-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. With Cousins lasting until Day 3, the Redskins raised eyebrows when they used the 102nd overall pick in the draft on a quarterback after previously swapping first-round picks and sending a 2012 second-round pick and two future first-round picks to the St. Louis Rams to move up four spots to select Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 overall pick. Griffin already has been named the starter by Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, so Cousins will compete with veteran Rex Grossman for the No. 2 job this summer.
With Cousins signed, Griffin and guard Josh Leribeus, a third-round pick, are the two unsigned Redskins draft choices.
