Lions' Haloti Ngata (hamstring) placed on NFI list

Haloti Ngata will not be on the field when the Detroit Lions begin training camp.

The team announced Monday that the veteran defensive tackle, acquired in an offseason trade with the Ravens, has been placed on the active/non-football injury (NFI) list. Ngata can be activated and re-join his new Lions teammates in practice at any time during training camp.

The defensive tackle has a hamstring injury, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports, but it's certainly possible Ngata could be on the field by the end of the week. Translation: There's no reason to ring any alarm bells ... at least not yet.

Ngata was a durable figure during his time as a run-stuffer with the Ravens, appearing in 135 regular-season games over nine seasons.

Ngata could use a full training camp as he attempts to fill the void left by Ndamukong Suh, who signed with the Dolphins on the first day of free agency. The Lions' team site expects Tyrunn Walker and Caraun Reid to take most first-team reps until Ngata is ready.
