Detroit Lions legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders announced Friday that he experienced a heart-related "health scare" last weekend.
"Over Father's Day weekend, I experienced a health scare related to my heart," Sanders wrote in a statement posted on social media. "It was unexpected and served as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant about our physical well-being, even when we are feeling fine.
"I am grateful for the amazing doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals for providing me with needed care. My family and I are thankful for your prayers and support during this time.
"Per my doctors' recommendation, I am taking this opportunity to prioritize my health and well-being. I appreciate your understanding and continued support."
Sanders, who sits fourth all-time with 15,269 rushing yards, is regarded as one of the greatest players in NFL history. His 10 seasons (1989-1998) with Lions left an indelible mark in Detroit and he was forever immortalized with a statue outside of Ford Field during the 2023 season.
The 55-year-old recently made a public appearance at the 2024 NFL Draft, which took place in Detroit last April.
