Backus said the feeling was similar to the one he experienced when he tore his left pectoral muscle during the offseason.
"A guy made an inside move, and I went to hook him with my arm and my bicep popped," Backus told the Detroit Free Press. "Simple. I knew right when it happened what happened. With the experience with my (pectoral), I knew what it felt to tear a muscle and it was the exact same sensation."
A mainstay of the Lions' offensive line who hasn't missed a start since entering the league, Backus also is an impending free agent.
Cornerback Chris Houston also suffered what he called a "mild dislocation" of his left shoulder.
"My shoulder pad hit on top of my joint, and it swelled up and it wasn't able to move," Houston said.
