Tim Patrick needed less than a day to find a new NFL home.
The former Denver Broncos receiver signed with the Detroit Lions' practice squad on Wednesday, a day after he was cut by Denver.
Not done adding veteran wideouts, Detroit also added Allen Robinson, who was cut Tuesday by the New York Giants.
Patrick's fit with the Lions makes plenty of sense. Detroit clearly needed a veteran option at the position after watching Josh Reynolds leave for Denver in the offseason, and the matter became more concerning during the preseason, in which few (if any) of the receivers outside of the Lions' top three made significant strides to earn an established role as the fourth option.
Detroit released Donovan Peoples-Jones, Daurice Fountain and Tom Kennedy Tuesday, while waiving Maurice Alexander, Jalon Calhoun and Kaden Davis in order to meet the 53-man maximum by the 4 p.m. ET Tuesday deadline. In addition to Patrick and Robinson, the Lions are also bringing back Kennedy.
Robinson is no stranger to the NFC North, as he spent four seasons with the Chicago Bears. Having started his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars before moving on to Chicago, Robinson has become a journeyman following the 2021 season with the Bears. He played subsequent years with the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers before signing on with the Giants this spring.
Patrick is in the midst of a comeback attempt after missing the last two seasons due to injuries. He recorded his first reception in order two years during Denver's preseason opener against Indianapolis and seemed to be building momentum toward a successful 2024 season before Denver's numbers game left him as the odd man out.
Detroit could find a use for him before long.
