With starter Peyton Manning on the mend, the Indianapolis Colts signed Jared Lorenzen and Quinn Gray for their depleted quarterback unit on Thursday, the team announced.
The duo will join long-time reserve Jim Sorgi and rookie free agent Adam Tafralis out of San Jose State. Sorgi was a sixth-round draft pick of the Colts in 2004.
Lorenzen, whose status in New York came into question after the Giants signed David Carr and drafted Andre Woodson, was cut by the team last month. Gray had spent the last three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Colts are looking for camp arms with Manning on the mend after undergoing surgery last week on his left knee to remove an infected bursa sac, a procedure that is expected to keep him inactive for at least a month.
Signed by the Giants as a free agent in 2004, Lorenzen left the team after minicamp and did not return for personal reasons. The big left-hander rejoined the club in 2005 and spent the past three seasons as a seldom-used backup to Eli Manning.
Lorenzen played in four regular-season games and one postseason game with the Giants. All eight of his regular-season passes came last season, with four completions for 28 yards.
Gray appeared in 11 games over three seasons with the Jaguars, four as a starter.
