Malcom Floyd took a brutal hit on Sept. 15, suffering a season-ending neck injury that almost forced him to walk away from football.
However, on Tuesday, the wide receiver was back on the field with teammates for OTAs and cleared for contact.
"It's great to have guys like Malcom back out there," said Mike McCoy said, per the team's official website. " ... He's worked extremely hard to get back to where he is. He deserves everything. He's worked so hard and that's why he's played so long in this league ... He looked and moved around like the old Malcom. So we're off to a good start with him."
Floyd wasn't sure as recent as three months ago if he'd make it back. The 32-year-old said as the pain subsided, he was determined to make an impact on the field in 2014.
"I hope I can add some more firepower," he said. "I felt really good today. Today's down and we're looking forward to tomorrow and just getting better ... I'm not tentative. I'm very confident and just eager to go back out there. I want to start where I left off at I'm very excited."
The Chargerswon a playoff game with only rookie Keenan Allen as a valid threat at receiver. The team didn't add outside speed through free agency or the draft. Therefore, if healthy, the aging Floyd could play a vital role in McCoy's run-heavy, quick-pass offense.
